Journalism and Yearbook Pathway
The Journalism/Yearbook pathway in Georgia high schools is designed to develop students’ skills in research, writing, interviewing, editing, design, and ethical reporting, while providing authentic opportunities to create school newspapers, digital news sites, broadcasts, and yearbooks. The goal is to help students understand the role of journalism in informing communities and to build strong communication, literacy, and critical‑thinking skills that transfer to both college and career settings.
Students in the journalism or yearbook pathway typically complete a three‑course sequence that progresses from introductory journalism skills to advanced, publication‑based work. Coursework often includes news and feature writing, photojournalism, layout and graphic design, media law and ethics, and the use of digital publishing tools. A signature component of the pathway is project‑based learning, where students collaborate as editorial teams to plan, produce, and distribute real publications such as yearbooks or school news media. Many programs also encourage participation in organizations like the Georgia Scholastic Press Association (GSPA), which supports leadership development, peer critique, and professional standards in student journalism. Overall, the Journalism/Yearbook pathway prepares students for postsecondary study in journalism, mass communications, public relations, or related fields, while also strengthening skills valued in any profession, including effective writing, teamwork, and responsible media engagement.
