Interview with Brissia Hernandez, Class of 2026 Salutatorian

Ms. Price: I’m here with Brissia Hernandez, the Salutatorian for the Class of 2026 at Stephenson High School. We’re going to talk about the journey that helped get you to this moment. First question—how did you feel when your name was announced?

Brissia Hernandez: I was definitely very happy. I had all my friends around me throughout the entire ceremony, and they were really encouraging. I was hoping I would be up there, but I still doubted myself a little. Having them there to support and motivate me meant a lot, and that’s what made the moment so special.

Ms. Price: This announcement represents the culmination of four years of hard work. What did it take to get you to this point?

Brissia Hernandez: It took a lot of hard work and effort. I had to constantly push myself, especially with balancing rigorous classes while maintaining my grades. On top of that, I was involved in extracurricular activities and sports, so it was really about staying committed and not giving up even when things felt overwhelming.

Ms. Price: You’re a student‑athlete, you play volleyball, and you’re involved in several organizations  like SGA and being the President of HOPE. How did those experiences contribute to your success in the classroom?

Brissia Hernandez: Honestly, all of those experiences taught me how to manage my time and responsibilities better. I’ve gained so much from being involved in different activities, and they’ve helped me grow as a person. I enjoy everything I’m part of, so putting effort into it never felt forced. That enjoyment motivated me to keep pushing myself and doing better in all areas.

Ms. Price: Did your counselors play a role in helping you select and stay on track with the classes you needed to earn Salutatorian?

Brissia Hernandez: Yes, absolutely. I’m very thankful for Mr. Hughes, our head counselor. While I had to take the initiative to schedule meetings and advocate for myself, he was always there to guide me and help me make decisions about my classes and goals. Once I reached out, I knew I had support every step of the way.

Ms. Price: That’s a great reminder—being your own advocate matters. Have you started writing your graduation speech yet?

Brissia Hernandez: I haven’t officially started writing it, but I’ve definitely been thinking about the key points and what I want to include. I’m focusing on what’s meaningful to me and what I want to share with my classmates.

Ms. Price: We know you can’t announce your final college decision just yet, but what major are you considering, and what are your top three schools?

Brissia Hernandez: I’m interested in majoring in communications or public relations. Right now, my top three schools are Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia, and Cornell.

Ms. Price: That’s amazing—an Ivy League in the mix! Finally, how do you feel overall as you prepare to graduate?

Brissia Hernandez: I’m really happy and grateful to be at this point. It’s been a long four years with a lot of work and dedication. It’s definitely bittersweet because I’ve made so many memories at Stevenson and been part of so many opportunities, but I’m excited for what’s next.

Ms. Price: What message would you leave for future Jaguars coming after you?

Brissia Hernandez: You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else—just keep pushing forward.

Ms. Price: Thank you so much, Brissia Hernandez, Salutatorian of the Class of 2026.
